While it’s perfectly enjoyable to go out on a motorcycle ride on your own, riding in a group is much more fun. You get to spend time with your group and make memories. Even the least interesting route you take will be exciting when you’re with your fellow motorcycle riders! You do, however, have to put in some planning before you head out on your motorcycle with your friends to ensure your success.

Pack For The Journey

You’ll need to make sure that you have the supplies necessary to take care of everyone on the ride. Ensure that everyone fills up their gas tanks and carries water and food for the trip. If you’re going camping, then everyone will need overnight supplies. At least one rider should carry a toolkit and a first-aid kit for everyone’s use in the event of an emergency. Cell phones should be charged up and available in case you need to call for help.

Plan Your Route in Advance

You can’t just strike out in any direction and expect everyone to keep up if you don’t plan ahead! Gather with your group in advance of your ride to select a route. Look up the route online to make sure there’s no road construction or closures that you should be aware of. It’s also helpful to check the weather forecast to make sure conditions will be good for your ride. While people may still get left behind at times inadvertently, having a route to follow with planned stops along the way ensures that they can catch up again.

Choose a Riding Formation

Having an established riding formation will also help the group coalesce and remain together. Many groups like to use a formation called a “staggered double line,” where each rider is a second or two ahead of and behind the riders around them, and riders are to the side of each other. From above, this formation resembles a zipper.

Choose someone to put in the lead that knows the route or has a GPS unit to guide them. Make it someone with a lot of riding experience. By the same turn, your rider bringing up the rear should also be experienced so that they can stop and help any riders who may need assistance. They’re a good rider to pair with the toolkit!
